GEORGE TOWN, Nov 25 — The Maistrate’s Court here today fixed Jan 28 for remention of the case of a senior female police officer, L.Chandkumary, who was charged with deliberately releasing a detainee described as a ‘casanova’ last month.

Magistrate Dianne Nigrad Nor Azhar set the date after Deputy Public Prosecutor S.Selvaranjini informed the court that the defence only handed over a portion of the defence documents.

Dianne later ordered the defence to hand over additional documents before the date of remention of the case.

Chandkumary, 56, who holds the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was represented by counsel Danny C.Navarednam Dianne Nigrad.

On Oct 21, Chandkumary pleaded not guilty to two charges, namely, deliberately releasing a detainee and making a false report.

On the first charge, the accused who had served the Royal Malaysia Police for more than 20 years, was alleged to have purposely released a detainee, K. Prabaharan, 45, who was facing a cheating charge at 1.50pm at the George Town Court Complex, on Oct 9.

The accused was charged under Section 225A (1)(a) of the Penal Code which carries a three-year jail term, a fine or both, upon conviction.

On the second charge, she was alleged to have lodged a false police report at the North-East District Police Station at about 8.05pm on the same night regarding the same incident.

On the second count, she was charged under Section 182 of the same code which carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both.
